women are great plan-
ners. Their organizational skills
help keep everything from school
lunches to board meetings in line.
But there’s one thing that women
sometimes forget to plan for—a
healthy heart.

time to form habits for a long,
healthy life. But no matter your age,
you can protect your heart with
these steps:
Make a date with a friend to get
some exercise.
Go for a walk or bike
ride together. Or stay home and do
some yard work. Aim to be active at
least 30 minutes a day on most or all
days of the week.
Write a heart-healthy grocery
list.
Plan meals with plenty of fruits,
vegetables and whole grains. Go
light on salty and fatty foods.
Ditch the cigarettes.
If you
smoke, find out about programs that
can help you
quit.
Pick a
target weight.
Your health-
care provider
can help you determine your best
weight and how to achieve it.
If you have risk factors for heart
disease—such as diabetes, high
cholesterol or high blood pressure—
your provider may prescribe
medicine to control them. It’s all
part of the plan for your healthy
heart.
