“ARE
there
any questions?”
at’s a
question you’ve
likely heard
before—many
times.
But the
question may
never be more
important than
when it’s asked
by your physician. When a doctor
is talking about your health, a test
you should have, or a medicine being
prescribed, you need to know exactly
what he or she is saying.
Good questions for the doctor
It’s not unusual to nd things
confusing from time to time. But if
you don’t know precisely what your
doctor or health care provider is tell-
ing you, it’s harder to stay well or to
get better.
If your doctor asks whether you
have any questions, and you do, ask
away. But even if he or she doesn’t
ask and you believe you need more
details, speak up.
ree simple questions
can
o en provide you with valuable
information:
1
What’s the main problem I’m
facing?
2
What do I need to do?
3
Why is it important for me to
do this?
If you have questions that are
more speci c, ask them too—even
if you feel nervous or embarrassed.
And don’t give up if you still don’t
understand. You might say, “Doc-
tor, this is all new to me, and I still
don’t know if I fully understand what
you’re saying. Would you mind go-
ing over things one more time?”
Remember, your good health
could depend on your willingness
to speak up. So don’t hesitate to
keep asking questions until you’re
comfortable with the answers.
