SPRING
is in the air—and so
are the pollen and mold spores that
can trigger seasonal allergies.
Symptoms—such as sneezing,
watery eyes and stu y noses—can
start in the spring and last throughout
the summer and fall, depending on the
types of allergens oating in the air.
For example,
tree pollens tend
to make trouble in
early spring, while
weed pollens are
bothersome in late
summer. In fact,
pollen allergies are among the nation’s
most common chronic conditions.
“If seasonal sneezing is a problem
for you, you can do something about
it,” says Dorinda Midwood, DO.
Medical help is available, but a
good place to start is by avoiding
things that trigger your allergies. You
can’t elude every microscopic pollen
grain or mold spore, but you can
reduce your exposure. Dr. Midwood
o ers these tips:
w
Close windows and doors to keep
out pollen and mold, and use air
conditioning, if possible.
w
Try staying indoors when pollen
counts are high and
on dry, windy days.
You can get pollen
and mold counts
for many areas at
aaaai.org/nab
.
w
Don’t mow grass
or rake leaves. ese chores can stir
up allergens. If you must do them
yourself, wear a pollen mask.
w
Don’t hang laundry outside, where
it may collect pollen or mold.
w
Keep car windows closed while
driving.
